PROJECT: Green – Top Sustainable Design

Keene, NHTrikeenan and Whole Foods Market have been recognized by PROJECT: Green, a design competition highlighting “outstanding and visionary use of tile and stone in sustainable projects.”  The Dedham, MA Whole Foods Market, which uses Trikeenan’s tile extensively throughout the store, was one of only three commercial projects, internationally, to receive the honor.

The winning projects were profiled at the Coverings Expo, held in Orlando, FL from April 27-30, and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Environmental Design & Construction.  PROJECT: Green is a joint program between the magazine and Coverings, which is the largest exposition of tile and stone in the Americas.

Whole Foods specified Trikeenan tile for over 5,000 square feet of wall coverings in their Dedham, MA store, a project that earned both Green Globes Emerald and Green Chill certifications for its store-wide use of sustainable products and practices.

“Trikeenan has been fortunate to work with Whole Foods and other environmentally conscious companies as they create these really wonderful spaces that are also Green.  I think there’s a growing realization that you don’t have to give up beauty or function to build in a socially responsible way” said Kristin Powers, co-founder and CEO of Trikeenan.

“We know that our clean manufacturing processes, use of recycled and reclaimed materials, and local manufacturing are important to companies like Whole Foods, but the tile also has to be look great.  This project is a great example of how Green architecture can also be extraordinarily beautiful and functional.”

Whole Foods selected Trikeenan’s Basics™ and Modulus™ tile for a number of reasons: Trikeenan’s tile is 100% VOC-free, is extremely durable, and has a long life cycle and low carbon footprint.  Trikeenan offers product lines with 50% – 85% recycled content, and employs a variety of Green manufacturing processes.  The tile itself is made in New York and New Hampshire, well within the 500-mile regional manufacturing distance highly sought in Green building.

In addition to the commercial winners, PROJECT: Green honored projects in four other categories: Residential, Most Recycled Content, Green Bath, and, Green Kitchen. A panel of experts judged the projects based on their environmental attributes, innovative use of tile and stone in a High Performance project and the following:

  • Overall project design
  • Innovative use of tile/stone
  • Tile/stone design
  • How the tile stone enhances the setting and the project’s sustainable attributes
  • Other areas of interest include: recycled content; low VOC adhesives and grout; maintenance; LCA
